Hey, how long has it been since you came nose-to-beak with an emu? They're quite something. Four or five feet tall, and their feathers are all shaggy and grey, not sleek like most other birds. They look like Mexican palapas, walking around on dinosaur feet, with an ostrich head at one end. Not very bright, apparently, but fairly personable.
These were at Harvard's experimental farm in Concord, out by the Great Meadows wildlife refuge. I found it by biking out the Minuteman trail and keeping on after it ends, along the railroad grade. Check em out.

Not in a zoo or a pen, though. We were stopped for gas, and an apparently tame one wandered over to our car and started harassing us for a handout.
We didn't have anything obvious to give him, and weren't sure just what an emu should eat anyway. He got pissed off when we got into the car and started the engine, and started pecking at the windows rather aggressively as we started to move off. Then he started trotting after us, until we were out of the lot and back on the road.
They ARE either incredibly ugly or funny-looking, depending on your point of view.
